It seems the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is fairly advanced on the development of its final part: after the first and second titles (April, 2020 and February, 2024), the last entry on the eponymous rework of the original, 1997 game is seemingly drawing to a close (or not…).
That, however, doesn’t mean that the game is close to a release date: so far, we know that it’ll be launched for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows. And while we know where the story might go thanks to the original title, it is worth noting that publisher Square Enix did take some creative liberties on expanding the source material, which might throw us a curveball or twenty, plot-wise.
But a release date is anything but pure speculation at this point: while other developers and studios have stated that sequels usually come out faster than its predecessors, this is Final Fantasy we’re talking about — as the main RPG brand from Square Enix, it wouldn’t be unexpected for them to take its sweet time polishing the game to a brimming excellency.
The last game in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy has a name (almost!)
Yes, believe it or not, the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is yet to decide on a name for its last entry. Well, perhaps “decide on which name” would be a fairer statement, since the game’s main development heads — Naoki Hamaguchi and Tetsuya Nomura — have told Julien Chièze (via Genki_JPN) that they’re down to two options.
“Me and Tetsuya Nomura have already narrowed it down to two, within the year we will decide on which one. Within this year, it will be set,” Hamaguchi stated.
Obviously, they did not explicitly name those options out loud. Given Square Enix’s penchant for naming things somewhat similarly in between editions, we’re gonna speculate it’s something that starts with an “R” — as the first game came out as “Remake” and the second one was titled “Rebirth” (not to mention the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion prequel that came out in 2022).
We’re likely on the waiting line to know this bit of info for some more time, however, as a proper name, while a important part, is not the most important of a game development process.
Speaking of which…

Final Fantasy VII Remake (Part 3?) has the main content “almost complete”
In the same interview, Hamaguchi gave us a far more interesting news piece than a simple name: the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy already has its final content completely made.
According to the game’s development boss, “the core game experience is almost complete, and we’re now in the phase of refining and polishing it.”
Hamaguchi also stated that, while he wants gamers to get in on the project as soon as possible, Square Enix will take its time making sure that every digital nook and cranny is taken care of in order to ensuring the “creme de la crème” experience JRPG fans have come to expect from the franchise.
“Once we go through this phase properly, we’ll be able to present it in a form we’re satisfied with. So I ask everyone to wait just a little longer, and we’ll be able to share more information soon,” Hamaguchi said.
So, is an announcement impending or not? Well, we can’t say for sure. However, we are close to this year’s The Game Awards ceremony. While Square Enix is nominated in a few categories (with Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles), the entire event is also known for its plethora of world premiere reveals.
Make sure to stay tuned and find out.
