All of Pokémon World Championships announcements (yes, ALL of them!)
Mega Evolution makes a big comeback
Fans of the Mega Evolution mechanic have reason to celebrate, as it will officially return across multiple Pokémon games.
According to a specific, two-part set of new information, in Pokémon TCG Pocket, Mega cards are coming this fall, allowing players to power up their Pokémon during mobile battles. The initial previews included Mega Altaria, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Blaziken, all of which showcase strategic possibilities and visually striking designs that will stand out in competitive play.
As for the physical Pokémon TCG, players were also offered a glimpse of upcoming Mega EX cards, including Mega Charizard X ex, Mega Gardevoir ex, Mega Lucario ex, and Mega Dragonite ex, with additional Mega ex cards slated for 2026.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A gets a new multiplayer mode
Well, talk about anticipation: not only it will be at Gamescom 2025, the ever-ellusive game Pokémon Legends: Z-A is also confirmed to be stepping into the multiplayer scene with the Z-A Battle Club, marking a notable shift for the series.
According to the Pokémon World Championships announcements, in this “club”, players can engage in four-player real-time battles where points are scored by defeating opponents’ Pokémon within a three-minute time limit, adding both intensity and strategy to each encounter. For more casual fun, Private Battles allow up to three friends to join locally or online, giving trainers the flexibility to practice, experiment, or enjoy friendly competitions.
Just as a reminder: Pokémon Z-A is scheduled for release on October 16th, 2025, for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
Pokémon Champions steps into the spotlight
The upcoming Pokémon Champions game will serve as the official platform for the 2026 Pokémon Video Game Championships (VGC), putting it squarely in the competitive spotlight.
According to official info, the game will host official tournaments, including ranked matches where Mega Evolutions are integrated into the rules, allowing players to fully utilize strategic combinations in official play. Champions aims to bridge casual and professional gaming, providing a structured, high-level environment for competitive Pokémon battles on both Switch and mobile.
Updates for Pokémon UNITE
Pokémon UNITE is expanding both its roster and arenas, refreshing the competitive landscape. New playable Pokémon include Empoleon, arriving on September 19, alongside Dhelmise and Vaporeon, each offering unique abilities and gameplay dynamics.
The return of Theia Sky Ruins introduces updated map features, and Groudon temporarily replaces Rayquaza in the final stretch of timed events, adding a fresh strategic element for players to navigate.
Pokémon GO: Max Finale
One of the most well-received Pokémon World Championships announcements saw Niantic confirming Pokémon GO Fest 2025: Max Finale, a free event designed to challenge trainers and offer rare encounters.
Players will have the opportunity to battle and catch Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon, including select species from previous events. The legendary Eternatus will make a special appearance, providing a unique and exclusive encounter for attendees.
It is important to clarify, though: trainers will have the opportunity to battle a powerful Eternamax Eternatus in Max Battles, and defeating it will reward them with a large amount of Eternatus Candy and Candy XL. However, this specific form of Eternatus cannot be caught from these battles: instead, trainers can obtain a regular Eternatus by completing tasks on the new GO Pass: Max Finale, which is automatically given to all trainers.
Worlds 2026 and PokémonXP
The 2026 Pokémon World Championships will take place in San Francisco, complemented by PokémonXP, a new fan-focused expo designed to enhance the event experience. PokémonXP will feature panels, workshops, special guests, and exclusive merchandise, giving fans opportunities to engage with the franchise beyond the competitive tournaments.
