Metal Gear Solid Delta Review Roundup: this Snake is solid!

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater | Review Roundup

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is only due for release in a few more days, but the reviews have already started pouring in today. As Konami lifts the embargo on its latest entry on the stealth tactical action franchise, most of the large-scale outlets in the industry have published their opinions…

and they are raving! Not only it already has a 87/100 (94%) approval on OpenCritic, for a lot of reasons, it seems the game has finally brought the franchise back from the limbo it was left upon after Metal Gear SURVIVE and, before that, the whole “Kojima situation” that we’ll avoid touching here for the time being.

Below, you can find a small “review roundup” of sorts, as we scoured the internet and compiled the opinions on the game. Also, do be sure to stick around, as we are still in the middle of our review, which should come out in a few days.

IGN

With a score of 8 out of 10, in Michael Higham’s words:

“In not being shy about crediting Kojima and his team throughout, Konami preserved Snake Eater in a way that’s nearly one-to-one, other than a massive visual overhaul. So while it has definitely aged in the 21 years since, there’s a certain novelty to its old-school stealth-action gameplay and spy thriller story that still hits – especially with the way Snake Eater wraps up, how can you not be romantic about Metal Gear Solid all over again?”

In Tamoor Hussain’s 9/10 take, his only gripe was the fact that the “old” theme song is not “the old theme song”, but a new take. Huh…that might resonate with a certain article we’ve written a few days ago…:

“Delta looks absolutely stunning–jaw-dropping at times. In the jungle areas, the environments have the vibrancy and life that you’d expect to come from the naturality of green grass, towering trees, thick mud, decaying bricks, and worn wood, but it never feels artificial and, in fact, feels like it makes good on the Cold War-era, Soviet Union-set vibe in the same way the original did.”

Longtime journalist Michael McWhertor says:

“But once you get into the action — which, admittedly, takes a while, because the game is frontloaded with exposition — you’ll find the Metal Gear Solid 3 you remember, only much better looking. Delta’s jungle environments in the early game are rendered beautifully. Characters, including Snake, Eva, and The Boss, look spectacular, richly rendered in a way that makes them look more photorealistic than ever, but still stylized in Metal Gear Solid’s aesthetic.”

Kotaku

Kotaku’s Claire Jackson states:

“Delta stands to remind us of just how powerful this era of MGS was, when it was laser focused on captivating, linear level structure, along with a story you could enjoy as you would a film, not the disconnected threads that Phantom Pain asked players to stitch together themselves. It also streamlines those aspects of the original that saw you spending much of your time diving through cumbersome menus, and offers a more traditional camera and aiming experience via its “New Style” mode, which the game defaults to.”

Scott Duwe’s analysis on Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a short, albeit sweet, one:

“As a very dedicated, long-time fan of the series, I’m pleased to say Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is everything a remake should be. It remains true to the original in basically every single way, while offering enhanced visuals and a better take on gameplay than what was offered 21 years ago, making it feel like a new and complete package.”

What about PRG’s take?

Easy there, sailor. We just got the game, and we’re going through every digital nook and cranny of it in order to convey a fully faithful report on our experience. We can spoil that, so far, things are looking good. We got a bunch of longtime fans here who were, quite understandably, leaning on the backfoot a little due to us being somewhat scared of Konami messing up something so essential to our gaming formation.

Judging by everyone’s impression so far, it seems our fears were indeed misplaced. So you can expect a full review of our own by next week 🙂
