WARNING: there will be massive spoilers that we’ll need to use in order to proper contextualize Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2. That includes the ending of the anime’s first season and the fate of very plot-important characters, so consider this your cautionary advice.
Yes, Cyberpunk Edgerunners is getting a new season. And yes, it’s been referred to as “Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2”.
Originally streamed on Netflix in September 2022, Cyberpunk Edgerunners garnered major attention for creating a parallel story within the universe of Cyberpunk 2077. While the game and the anime never crossed paths, at least not directly, there were quite a few easter eggs here and there that brought connection between both products.
Fast-forward almost three years later, and Poland-based publisher CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has confirmed a season two, pretty much dominating all headlines across the gaming, streaming and anime mediums.
And, like every project of this magnitude, people have already begun speculating. However, as little information as we have on the new project, there are some tidbits you should know about Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2, such as…

When is Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 coming out
We’ll just get this out of the way right now: Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 is coming out “in due time”, according to CD Projekt Red.
While referred to as a continuation to the much loved story from September 2022, nobody knows for sure what exactly it will entail. Details like, plot, cast, how it connects to other Cyberpunk media (such as the “launched after” massive expansion Phantom Liberty)—everything is still very much under wraps and, because CDPR is CDPR, you can be damn sure they’ll take their sweet time giving out every bit of info.
If we consider history alone, we’d guess somewhere around 2027’s second half: the first season was originally announced in mid-2020 only to be aired in September, two years later. By that logic, this puts Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 somewhere between September and October 2027. But like we said, we still don’t know for certain.
However, we already know some things…
Don’t hold your breath if you wanna see David Martinez again
David Martinez, voiced by Zach Aguilar (whose experience includes A LOT of anime, from Koichi Hirose in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable to Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba ), was the lead character in Edgerunners first foray into the spotlight.
“Was”, because, well, he died. “Awesomely, heroically, out with a bang” died. In a last-ditch effort in a battle against the all-powerful mercenary assassin called Adam Smasher, David put up one hell of a fight, but in the end, he got shot in the head after being taken down, all his cybernetic enhancements rendered inoperative.
He did die a happy man, though, as the context being set by previous episodes let us know that he was comfortable in saying goodbye after making sure that his beloved Lucy would still live to fulfill her dream.
Albeit many, many theories positioning David’s survival (and the fact that the return of the series had Aguilar, alongside Lucy’s voice actor, Emi Lo, in its announcement), CDPR have already confirmed that no dead character will return for Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2. Hell, CDRP’s announcement post on X (formerly Twitter) says it rather explicitly:
Instead, according to the publisher, the new season will feature “an entirely new story, fresh characters, and a raw, realistic take on the most dangerous city of the dark future.”
What that means in practical terms is, well, still in the void of many possibilities. Is David Martinez the only absent character and the others will return? Is the second season made entirely of new characters and actors? Will both stories connect with one another or is CDPR pursuing the anthological (i.e. “you don’t need to see number one to understand number two”) approach, like shows like True Detective?
We’llhave to wait some more to know…
Who’s making Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2
That’s easy: Studio Trigger, the same name behind the art style and writing for the first season, returns to work in Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2. Furthermore, Netflix is also streaming the whole thing again.
The setting will also be the same: Night City—but that’s a given, considering the game and the first season plotlines. According to Netflix, a “new crew” will be responsible for this project, which, by the way, will be 10 episodes long.
Anything more than that is on the waiting list for now.
Final thoughts: “I’ll Take You To The Moon! I Promise!”

The fact that we’re still far from seeing anything more consistent about Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 could be a blessing in disguise, when you think about it.
Considering this and next year’s calendar, we have Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, Solo Leveling: Arise from the Shadow, Ishura, Dr. Stone: Science Future Part 1, season 2 of The Apothecary Diaries…that’s a lot to watch out for—and this is the confirmed stuff: let’s not even get started on the rumors swirling around Jujutsu Kaisen, Frieren and several other heavyweights.
Could Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 stand its ground against any or all of them? Absolutely! The first season showed us that much: it’s a masterpiece that stands on its tw legs from start to finish, without a second to catch your breath.
But should it? That’s another discussion entirely: there is always the danger of an anime overload, after all, and the public might get bored of watching the genre one after another, nonstop.
At any rate, consider us hyped: at least one of us actually watched the anime first, then played the game later and, well, it gives a whole new perspective to everything. To see it possibly come with even more connections, we just might be in for one hell of a time.
