Ubisoft has reportedly cancelled its rumored Assassin’s Creed multiplayer game. The report comes from Origami, a French publication, citing information received from about half a dozen Ubisoft employees. The project is said to be internally codenamed Assassin’s Creed League, and we first heard about it in October 2024. The game was under development at the Ubisoft Annecy studio situated in Annecy, France.
Assassin’s Creed Multiplayer Game Started as a DLC for AC Shadows
The report says the rumored Assassin’s Creed multiplayer game began its life as a DLC expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This co-op multiplayer project would have allowed up to four players, aka assassins, to team up to complete scripted missions. These missions would have possibly taken place in the feudal Japanese era that we got to see in the main game.
Assassin’s Creed League was eventually transformed into a smaller but standalone cooperative multiplayer game experience. The decision was taken after the Ubisoft Annecy studio team realised it would take longer to develop it as a DLC. The team also had plans to start invite-only playing sessions in May 2026 to alpha test the game in real-world conditions. It wanted to improve the game based on the feedback and get approval from the headquarters.

However, League went on to become one of the victims of Ubisoft’s major company reset plans. The studio recently announced the cancellation of six games and a delay for seven projects. It also ended up closing two studios and laying off several employees as part of the overhaul. One thing to note is that the report claims cancellation of the Ubisoft multiplayer game is separate from the six games cancelled last month.
The rumored co-op multiplayer game was expected to work as a base for reintroducing multiplayer elements in future Assassin’s Creed projects. For those who might be unfamiliar, Ubisoft Annecy is the same studio that worked on multiplayer experiences available with Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Unity, and Black Flag. We can only hope for an Assassin’s Creed multiplayer experience in the future.
