Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows was the franchise’s “first” in many things: the first mainline game set in Japan, the first black/African protagonist, the first lead character based on a real life person — and now, the first with a now abandoned second expansion of its own.

Breaking a longtime (albeit unofficial) franchise tradition, Ubisoft has confirmed it will no longer release a second DLC expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, instead leaving the September-launched “Claws of Awaji” as, seemingly, the game’s sole story-based DLC. For the record, most Assassin’s Creed titles had at least two major expansions, ranging all the way from 2010’s Assassin’s Creed II — although some, like Mirage, had one; and Valhalla had three.

Speaking to YouTube channel JonRaptor, however, the game’s associate director, Simon Lemay-Comtois, confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will no longer have a second major update — something that was expected by the community, given that Claws of Awaji was introduced as “first” before Ubisoft scrapped its Season Pass. The idea was to offer both expansions for free for Season Pass holders.

“As of now, at this moment for Year Two, there is no expansion on the size of Awaji that is planned,” Lemay-Comtois stated. “We’re still working on content for post-launch and supporting it, but it’s not a full-on DLC the way a season pass would have had in the previous years.”

So, in layman’s terms: it’s not like Assassin’s Creed Shadows will no longer have DLC — the game will still have the occasional, maintenance-related, cosmetic-inserting stuff. Bug fixes and the like.

However, as new, story-driven, mission-based content goes, yeah, that probably ain’t happening anymore.

There’s no reason offered as to why Ubisoft made that decision, but Lemay-Comtois recognized this is something that changed along the way. Speaking to the channel, the director himself reminded the audience about the Season Pass situation and the entire marketing promotion of the game leading players to understand there was another expansion in the works.

Is that a decision that may change again in the future? Sure. Will it? Pro’ly not, in this case. What do you make of it? Is Ubisoft’s decision the correct one? Are you disappointed by this? Let us know in the comments!
