This is not the time you’ll see swords mashing big enemies in Black Myth: Zhong Kui — wait, can swords even mash things?
Publisher Game Science has released a new teaser of the Black Myth: Wukong sequel but, unlike the usual process you see in this industry, the only thing about the game is that the video, which you can see below, uses Zhong Kui’s in-game engine. Other than that, it’s a celebration of the Chinese New Year…through cooking.
Not gonna lie, some of these virtual food visuals do get my tummy a-rumblin’, and this comes from a guy who tried to make Final Fantasy XIV foods through their official cookbooks…
Anyway, here’s the video:
What’s a “Zhong Kui”?
First of all, that’s racist (right?). Second of all, according to Chinese folklore, Zhong Kui is a taoist deity depicted as a big dude with a big beard, looking all big and meanie and…beardy. And as bearded big people are wont to do, he has the capacity to sustain such a look, as he’s famous for commanding 80,000 demons and is widely considered a vanquisher of evil beings of all kinds. He’s also associated with the wufu, the five blessings that conceptualize good fortune in Chinese mythology.
He also lends his name and legend for Game Science’s next game, which we know nothing about: the project is called “Black Myth: Zhong Kui” and it was originally announced at Gamescom last year.
Much like its predecessor, Zhong Kui should be a soulslike game with a new, darker and action-oriented take on a major figure from Chinese mythology. As for what we know so far, well, the game is still in its early stages of development so don’t expect any quick release date, but it will come out in all major platforms — those being the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and X, as well as PC.
