Castlevania is so back, fellas. Or at least that’s what Konami leads us to believe.

Since this week’s State of Play event, where the Japanese publisher announced the new Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, the first new entry in the franchise since 2014’s Lords of Shadow 2 (there was Haunted Castle Revisited in 2024, but that’s not a “new” game, per se), people have been talking about the franchise a lot and, according to Konami, that’s the whole point, since this is just the first game in a bunch of other titles planned.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is set two decades after the events of 1989’s Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, and it features Trevor Belmont’s successor as the vampire-killing protagonist. As the inheritor of the iconic Vampire Killer holy whip, the warrior makes his way through the streets of 15th-century Paris, besieged by monsters, eventually reaching an ominous-looking castle whose inhabitants aim to seek the French capital in complete darkness.

Some gameplay features in the game will cater to longtime fans of the franchise, such as going back and forth around several areas in order to encourage exploration in exchange for rewards, as well as mastering different weapons so you can effectively dispel the forces that have taken root in the city. Hidden rooms aplenty and many seemingly unreachable areas also open up in several parts of the game…all par for the course on an authentic metroidvania gaming style.

And it is just the first. While Konami has not given any details as to what the entire project will entail (is it a connected trilogy? An anthology series? Just several, seemingly unconnected games under the same brand?), the company is telling everyone and their mothers how this is an attempt of bringing a “here to stay” vibe to a longtime franchise that was born in 1986.

Although it was revealed for PlayStation 5 on the State of Play event, Konami has confirmed that Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse will also be released on Xbox Series S/X and PC.
