Michał Kiciński, co-founder of CD Projekt Red (CDPR) and GOG, has acquired 100% ownership of GOG from CDPR. Both platforms confirmed the acquisition through separate press releases. The announcement further revealed that the GOG digital storefront will remain DRM-free and its mission: Make Games Live Forever. It said the platform will continue to operate independently, supporting gamers and developers through its DRM-free philosophy.
GOG Will Continue to Focus on Game Preservation
The deal between CD Projekt Red and KiciÅ„ski for GOG was completed for PLN 90.7 million (approx. USD 25.2 million). GOG was co-founded by KiciÅ„ski in 2008 and has operated as a CDPR subsidiary since its inception. Interestingly, CDPR was also co-founded by KiciÅ„ski with his brother in 1994. The deal is said to allow CDPR to focus on game development, while the digital storefront will “stay in good hands”. The two parties have also signed a distribution agreement that will result in future CD Projekt Red games releasing on GOG.
Talking about the deal, Kiciński said,
As a mature gamer, I often play classic games myself and deeply admire the creativity behind many of them. I truly believe that well-crafted classics can deliver as much joy as new releases. When it comes to pure playability, timeless games often prove to be really the safe choice, especially in a market flooded with gazillions of low-quality smaller games. Beyond preserving classics, GOG has always sought out new games with a retro spirit. I am personally involved in the development of a few games like that and they will certainly make their strong appearance on GOG in 2026.
Kiciński said he acquired GOG to ensure more and more games are preserved. He wants gamers to truly own a game after buying it, which unfortunately is not usually the case. CD Projekt Red said it decided to sell GOG because it wants to focus on developing and releasing high-quality RPG titles like The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077.
CDPR has assured that GOG is financially stable, and nothing has changed for existing users. Their accounts and library of games will continue to exist on GOG.
