The first ever Hellraiser game — Hellraiser: Revival — brings the legendary horror movie franchise created by Clive Barker to PC and consoles, and it just got a new developer diary highlighting some of its most interesting aspects.

Especially its more…adult aspects.

At least, according to art director Petra Nikolic and game director Emil Esov give a stern warning: if you have a problem with adult themes being approached explicitly, front and center, then this game might not be for you.

“[There’s] a lot of sexual[ly] explicit stuff, and a lot of gore, and a lot of violence”, Nikolic states, with Esov following up on something about you being “sensitive to” adult themes. [Hellraiser: Revival] is a discomforting and dark story about people with inner voids. It’s like a mix between violence and action, all wrapped in leather, flesh, and chains.”

So, in short, a Hellraiser movie, except in videogame form.

Hellraiser: Revival will use a lot of original content

Announced in July this year, Hellraiser: Revival is already going at its promotion full speed, with details about gameplay and plot already shared to a good extent by Boss Team Games and Saber Interactive (yes, the same people behind that Turok thing we’re kind of excited about).

In this first-ever Hellraiser game, you take on the role of Aidan, who must solve the puzzle box that serves as the center of all movies in order to free his girlfriend from the otherworldly realm known as “The Labyrinth”.

Now, for non-Hellraiser people, Hellraiser: Revival promises to lean heavily on the shocking appeal of sadomasochism, pleasure through pain and an overall torture as a means to climaxing. And the first way you notice that is by seeing the promotional media, confirming the game will be played from a first-person perspective.

As for content, well, not too much has been let on so far: Doug Bradley will return to portray the legendary villain Pinhead once more — as he did in the movies — and given that this is a videogame, the entire lore of Hellraiser might be more fleshed out in order to solve some lingering doubts about the cult of the Cenobites.

This is not the first time we saw Hellraiser content in gaming, however: Dead by Daylight did feature Pinhead as one of the killers, but was later removed due to licensing issues.

As for Hellraiser: Revival, the game still doesn’t have a release window confirmed, but it will come out for PC (Windows), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X.
