Bungie (Destiny and its sequel) came out of the shadows to confirm earlier rumors: Marathon will come out on March 5th, 2026. Not only that, but the game will cost $40, much like we anticipated in December, 2025. As of now, the title is confirmed for a multiplatform release, coming out on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles and PC (Windows).
The news came via a new trailer published on YouTube, detailing info on plot as well as pre-order shenanigans. Check it out below:
Just what is Marathon?
A reboot, long in the making, would be a good short answer for that question. Originally, Marathon came out in December, 1994, released by Bungie on Apple’s old Macintosh computers. In terms of plotline, it didn’t really have much: you would assume the role of a nameless security officer aboard a large colony ship that is a namesake for the game. Gameplay mechanics were slim, limited to movement control and looking/glancing.
The new Marathon, however, changes all of that. In this project, you take control of a “Runner” tasked with infiltration of high-security structures inside the colony named Tau Ceti IV, to extract valuable gear. For that, you’ll have access to several Runner Shells that confer several perks and abilities.
Furthermore, while the original Marathon was a single player experience, this one is being delivered as a multiplayer extraction shooter, with heavy emphasis on PvP mechanics. However, much like other titles in the genre, you’re not playing alone, but as part of a team, each member with their own role to portray.

Marathon was supposed to come out in September, 2025, but a series of delays — including a full review from Bungie itself, then dissatisfied with that version’s current looks — the title ended up pushed back to 2026.
Also interesting is the fact that, despite being a multiplatform game, Marathon is being published by Sony.
