Rumor: Marvel’s Wolverine will be featured in a new State of Play event—here’s what we know

Marvel's Wolverine

Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine might be back from the abyss, reportedly taking front and center on a new State of Play event Sony might be gearing up to show for late September.

That’s according to Insider Gaming and the page’s sources, who remain nameless due to their proximity to the Japanese publisher’s plans. If confirmed, this will mark the very first time Marvel’s Wolverine is featured in a show other than its original announcement in 2021—ironically, during another Sony event (PlayStation Showcase).

The website also states that, for the next event, we’ll likely see something about Bungie’s Marathon; a new, metroidvania-style God of War; Phantom Blade 0 and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Ghost of Yotei is also expected to make a final appearance before its October 2 launch date.

Considering we just had a State of Play stream focused on 007 First Light, this would mark two Sony events in the same moment, which is something strange, but not really unheard of.

Since it’s been 4 years since its announcement, one would be forgiven if not remembering much about Marvel’s Wolverine: granted, even if one kept up with the news as closely as possible, this situation would still be the same since nothing about the game really came out.

Not that Insomniac Studios isn’t doing anything: between 2021 and 2025, the studio launched two major Marvel-titled games (Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2) and faced a massive ransomware attack that saw employee information as well as several projects’ leaked online.

Still, Marvel’s Wolverine stood firm, having changed its original plans a little due to the aforementioned hack, but not giving away much information, so there really isn’t much to talk about.

Basically, we know the game will be set in the same universe as both Spider-Man titles, but it is unclear if Peter Parker or Miles Morales will make a cameo or some other, more emphatic appearance. Marvel’s Wolverine is also a PlayStation 5 exclusive and will have an original story, much like the preceding games, but Insomniac has stated that it is looking at some of the Canadian angry, height-challenged hero’s best comic arcs to draw inspiration.

This, however, also means that the game might be a ways off still: Insomniac itself has stated its intention of doing an “emotional narrative” and, if Spider-Man games are any indication, the writing itself will take a lot of time.

How’s the gameplay looking?

Another aspect that might demand some focused dedication is gameplay: much like Spider-Man, Insomniac wants to create a unique, Wolverine-like experience, catering to the character’s most well-known abilities, like the adamantium claws and its healing factor. Granted, we had a game that did those two pretty well (2009’s X-Men Origins Wolverine: the game sucked, by the way, but Wolvie’s representation was pretty solid), but knowing Insomniac, they’ll likely create something more densely developed.

Luckily, we know that, as of April 2025 at least, the Sony-backed studio has its full focus on Marvel’s Wolverine: at the time, the development team responded a fan inquiry on the game over at X/Twitter, stating: “We’re actively working on Marvel’s Wolverine for PS5. We’ll share news about the game when *we* are ready to share it. That will always be our answer.”

Sooooo…we can only speculate

Media-wise, we only have the seconds-long teaser you see opening this article—the aftermath of a bar brawl that many outlets hinted might be the Princess Bar, a joint that Wolverine and his fans know too well, as Logan loves the Madripoor-based establishment in the comics.

Furthermore, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is gearing up to reboot the X-Men part of it in 2027, introducing the mutant race and indicating it will be prevalent in movie theaters after Avengers: Secret Wars, which comes out in 2027. It wouldn’t be too surprising if Insomniac tried to make this timing work for Marvel’s Wolverine as well and get some free hype.

Other than that, things are still very much in the fog: Marvel’s Wolverine still has no planned release date, so we can only hope the State of Play event is not only real, but it gives away more details on the game.
