Konami wanted to own the latest State of Play stream and, to a large sum of people on the internet, it very much did so, by bringing news on all its big guns: a new Silent Hill, a new Castlevania (the first since 2014)…and Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2.
But this is not just an ode to the collection itself, as much as it is the well-deserved recognition of one of the best Metal Gear Solid games finally coming back to the spotlight, as the Japanese publisher did confirm that PlayStation 3’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is getting a remaster treatment for this plethora of games.
Now, I may be biased here — Metal Gear is one of the games that taught me how to speak English and, well, that’s part of the reason I have this job, after all — but I have mentioned before how, in this age of remakes and remasters, Guns of the Patriots remained isolated, which sucks, because it is the conclusion of a story that started all the way on Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater — and even that got a remake, so why not value its ending?
Well, Konami finally got off its own ass and listened to fan outcry, finally bringing it back into limelight, with a bunch of updates, so read on to find out what you’ll get with the new collection.
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, fully detailed
The Crown Jewel: Metal Gear Solid 4 Is Finally Free
The headline of this collection is undoubtedly Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Since its original debut in 2008, the game has been “trapped” on the PS3 due to its reliance on the console’s complex Cell Processor architecture, which made porting a notorious nightmare for developers. This release marks the first time ever that the epic conclusion to Solid Snake’s story will be playable on any other platform.
Konami isn’t just offering a simple port; they are providing a technical facelift. While the original hardware struggled to maintain 30 frames per second at 720p, this remastered version targets a stable 60 FPS on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Furthermore, because modern controllers lack the PS3’s unique pressure-sensitive face buttons, Konami has implemented customizable button settings to allow players to map those nuanced actions to modern triggers and analog controls.
The Full Lineup
While Guns of the Patriots is the main attraction, the bundle rounds out the Big Boss and Solid Snake sagas with a powerful selection of titles:
- Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker: This is the HD Collection version originally seen on the PS3 and Xbox 360. It follows Big Boss as he establishes his independent military unit in Costa Rica. Crucially, Konami has confirmed that online multiplayer remains functional, supporting cooperative play for 2 to 4 players and competitive Versus Ops for up to 6 players.
- Metal Gear: Ghost Babel: As another “first timer”, as no other platform besides old, retro portables had this one, Ghost Babel is a surprise “bonus” inclusion that has thrilled long-term fans. Originally released for the Game Boy Color in 2000, this non-canonical 2D gem is often cited as one of the best handheld stealth games ever made. The collection adds modern amenities like screen filters, a rewind function, and pixel-perfect display settings.
A Digital Museum for Tactical Espionage
Konami is treating this collection as a historical archive. Beyond the games themselves, the collection includes a wealth of supplemental material to help both veterans and newcomers “connect the dots” of the series’ dense lore:
- Metal Gear Solid 4 Database: This is a full restoration of the interactive encyclopedia originally released on the PS3. It contains a massive timeline and relationship charts covering the entire series canon up to 2008.
- Screenplay and Master Books: Each main title comes with a digital Screenplay Book featuring the full in-game scripts and a Master Book detailing story beats, character dossiers, and hidden secrets.
- Digital Soundtrack Vol. 2: Players can access a dedicated in-game player to enjoy iconic background music and vocal tracks from the series.
Pricing, Platforms, and Loyalty Rewards
The full collection is priced at $49.99, but for those who only want specific entries, Konami is offering Metal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker as standalone digital purchases for $19.99 each.
For those moving to the Nintendo ecosystem, the Switch 2 version is set to be a significant step up from its predecessor, supporting 60 FPS and utilizing AI upscaling for 4K output when docked. On the original Switch, the game targets 30 FPS. Physical collectors should note that the Switch 2 version uses a “Game-Key Card” format, which requires a 30.4 GB download to play.
Finally, loyalty pays off. If you have save data from Master Collection Vol. 1 on your system, you’ll automatically unlock the Gold Camouflage for MGS4 and the GOLD Uniform for Peace Walker. Pre-ordering also nets you the classic Cardboard Camouflage for MGS4 and the cooperative LOVE BOX uniform for Peace Walker.
The Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 will come out in August 27, 2026.
