We — well, I — have talked in the past about how Metaphor: ReFantazio totally deserved the Game of the Year award in 2024 instead of Astro Bot. While I stand by that statement, even I’m having a hard time trying to justify a new edition for the game that will make you $80 short in your pockets.
Not that the game itself is not impressive (like I said, “True GOTY 2024” and all), but a brand new, barely-upgraded edition from a game that came out two years ago, priced ten bucks higher than most current day launch titles is a bit of a hard sell any way you look at it.
According to Atlus and Studio Zero’s announcement, the new Metaphor: ReFantazio Guidebook Edition comes with the game’s official strategy guide (English only, 592 pages long). Except…is not a full guide: the entire book serves as an introduction to the world of ReFantazio, concepts of its lore, the overall context of the game’s plot and full strategy for…the base game’s first act.
Alongside the digital book, the new edition also comes with the digital soundtrack (which is amazing and readily available on Spotify and other streaming services), and a bunch of school uniforms reminiscing of Persona games (which is also done by Atlus and both it and Metaphor: ReFantazio share the same artstyle) — those being Shujin Academy School Uniform (seven) and Jouin High School Uniform. Complimentary of the whole set is the Battle Background Music and Battle Jingle Set.
It is worth noting that the overpriced final tag is only for new players, as previous Metaphor: ReFantazio owners will be able to upgrade the base game to the new Guidebook Edition for $14.99. You can find the base game at some discount on places like Amazon, if you look hard enough.
Other than that, the game is available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series S|X and PC (Windows, Steam).
