Best hemoglobin stealing simulator
A buzzing home-wrecker
What a strange and bizarre trip this game is. Mister Mosquito is a quirky action-stealth game, originally released on the PS2, where you play as a mosquito tasked with victimizing this innocent Japanese family while avoiding getting swatted. I vaguely recall seeing this game somewhere as a child but forgot about it until it was referenced in Astro Bot. Shortly afterwards, it was added to the PS-Plus library, I can only imagine in response to this. You fly around the house, terrorizing different family members with your incessant buzzing, and trying to fill up vials of their blood, all while trying not to get caught in the act. The catch? You have to be sneaky, patient, and super stealthy, or else you’ll end up getting turned into a stain on the wall. It’s like being a tiny vampire on a mission, but with a lot more buzzing and a lot less flare.
You’re basically a tiny winged menace, flying around and hoping no one notices you plotting your blood thieving schemes. As the game progresses, the family becomes increasingly on edge. At first, they’re pretty unmoved by your blood-sucking escapades, but after a few chapters they become increasingly more unhinged and their paranoia begins to drive a wedge between them all. A loving family slowly being torn apart all thanks to your tiny annoying presence. The game is funny, but it’s hard to tell if it’s trying to be. The movement and voice-acting of the characters are so jarringly out of place, it feels as if the game was either deliberately made to appear awkward and weird or simply rushed on a tight budget. Even for the PS2, this game is ugly as fuck, but I think that was a stylistic choice on the designers side. Regardless, I think it works. It adds humor to the already surreal look of the game so you end up just rolling with the madness. There’s definitely parts that were aiming to be comedic, like when the mother goes full Kung-Fu on you, literally doing kick-flips in the kitchen trying to kill you.
Thank BLOODY hell (haha) for the rewind feature that’s been implemented in some games. This was very useful in the PS-Plus version of this, otherwise I don’t think I would’ve finished the game. The gameplay is pretty unconventional. During precise moments, you have to fly up quickly and draw blood from a specific area of your target’s body. They will become increasingly annoyed with you draining them of their life force, sometimes even to the point of fainting- This is essentially the entire game- It’s not a very long game. You’re mostly just attacking the Father-Mother-Daughter trio, but occasionally, someone else, like the daughter’s friend will come over and you can spend some time tormenting her as well.
What makes Mister Mosquito so odd is that it takes an everyday annoyance- a mosquito- and turns it into a weirdly intense, stealth-driven adventure. You’re not just buzzing around mindlessly; you’re actually hunting down humans to drink their blood, which is already strange enough. But then, you’re tasked with sneaking around in a home, using the weirdest mechanics; hiding in the shadows, timing your movements just right, and making sure you don’t get pulverized. And the game doesn’t shy away from making you feel the weirdness, like, there’s a bizarre sense of satisfaction when you successfully suck blood without getting caught, and the human reactions are intense to say the least. It’s disorienting, but in a strangely fun and captivating way. The game is certainly one of a kind, but I can’t say that it’s one I’d revisit. I still enjoyed the short time I had with it.
Buzz buzz motherfucker,
