New Battlefield 6 Gas Mask Mechanic Gets Backlash From Players

Battlefield 6 has finally rolled out its Season 2 update, just like we said it would. And it did not take long for one feature to spark backlash: the so-called “gas mechanic,” which brings back memories of Battlefield 1, though with a few key differences.

For context, the gas mechanic in Battlefield 6 introduces a non-lethal environmental hazard. Instead of draining your health outright, it triggers effects like hallucinations, muffled audio, and blurred vision to heighten immersion. The only way to avoid it, or at least lessen its impact, is by equipping a gas mask.

Unlike Battlefield 1, where gas could kill you if you were not protected, this version will not finish you off directly. Instead, it weakens your awareness and reaction time just enough to make you an easy target. And while the gas itself may not be lethal, the bullets that follow certainly are.

The idea may have sounded good on paper. But based on early fan reactions, Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios may have misread the room this time.

Players are Really Not Happy With the Gas Feature

The first thing to clarify is that the gas feature is not tied to the overall gameplay loop. It is an element of a new Season 2 map called “Contaminated.” The rest of the season’s content, including returning fan-favorite maps and other additions, has generally been well received.

Still, complaints about Contaminated are starting to pile up. Players on Steam forums and Reddit have pointed out several aspects they dislike.

“If it’s just a little constant cloud in a place,” Reddit user SavingsFig5425 wrote, “nothing changes, everyone can just avoid it and then it’s just useless… making it annoying by lack of importance… not by mechanics.”

Meanwhile, user Colonel_dinggus says the button prompt to equip the gas mask does not work on consoles. Other users have replied that the same issue sometimes happens on PC.

Over on Steam, an entire discussion thread has formed around the mechanic. Some players argue that it only serves to speed up engagements, and a few have even compared it to Battlefield 6’s main competitor, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which recently rolled out its own Season 02 content to a more positive response.

Speaking to TechRadar, Battlefield 6 producer Phil Girette said the gas feature was intentionally designed to cloud players’ reactions through an immersive system. The goal, he explained, was to recreate the feeling of being enveloped in smoke and gas in real life.

“We have a lot of people still that worked on Battlefield 1 and that remember the gas — the old dear colleagues. We brought it back, and this time around it’s not damaging the player,” he said.

“The idea behind it was that it plays a lot more with your senses, and from the vision perspective, we wanted players to take it a bit slower. Whether they will actually do it is, of course, a different question, but [they should] be a little bit more technical and strategic. There is some resource management with the gas, as well as with the night vision goggles, where you can run out of cartridges or batteries, so you need to resupply or move out of the gas.”

At the time of publication, neither Electronic Arts nor Battlefield Studios had issued an additional statement, likely waiting for broader player feedback. That is understandable, considering Battlefield 6 Season 2 only launched on February 17, just a day ago. Opinions could shift as more players jump in, but for now, a noticeable portion of the community seems to be complaining rather than praising.

Battlefield 6 is available on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. Its connected battle royale mode, REDSEC, is also free to play on the same platforms.
