The rumors have turned out to be true as Sony has started selling a new, revised PS5 Digital Edition with less storage in Europe. The latest release has been a quiet one, without any official announcement or fanfare. YouTuber Austin Evans has showcased the new 825GB PS5 Digital Edition, imported from Germany, in his latest video. He has also compared it with the previously released 1TB PS5 Digital Edition to show what else has changed.

Sony Reduces PS5 Digital Edition Storage, But Not the Price

The newly released PlayStation 5 Digital Edition comes loaded with 825GB SSD, a significant drop from the previously upgraded 1TB storage. Sony has basically gone back to the early days when it first debuted the PS5 with 825GB storage. The new version (CFI-2116) has the same packaging as the previous model, except for a little text in the corner on the front and sides that says 825GB storage. It would not be surprising if someone misses the text and buys the console thinking he is getting 1TB storage out of the box.

In his video, Evans goes on to show that the new PS5 Digital Edition has only 667.2GB of storage available for installing games and apps. The worst part is that Sony does not seem to have plans to reduce the price. It means buyers will be spending the same amount of money for less storage on their new consoles.

Evans further noted that the storage is not the only thing that has changed. Sony has opted for a complete matte finish on the new PS5 variant. It has replaced the previously available glossy finish on the central Black part and the top half of the back panel. He says that while this decision makes the console look a bit cheaper, it will now look less dirty after long usage.

The new console is also about 100g lighter than the previous model. This led to a teardown, which showed changes made to the internals. Sony seems to have revamped the heat sink design, but heat dissipation remained unchanged. The team has further made the fan lighter and refined the motherboard design. Evans was impressed with these engineering changes, but it was the storage reduction for the same price that took his joy away.

The 825GB PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is currently available in European markets. It is unknown when it will make its way to the rest of the markets. Sony recently hiked PS5 prices by $50 across all models in the United States. It said the decision was taken to navigate the current economic challenges due to increased tariffs.
