Sony’s next State of Play could be heavily Marvel-centered

State of play/Wolverine/Venom

A new rumor about Sony hosting another State of Play event has surfaced, courtesy of reliable leaker NateTheHate via X. According to the man, who managed to confirm Switch 2’s announcement a few days before Nintendo divulged the information officially, a new stream will be shown to viewers “next week”.

Yeah, not exactly the most solid rumor, if you ask us, but it does add some credibility to an earlier report that Sony was on the verge of revealing proper details about Marvel’s Wolverine: the Insomniac-made title is part of Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, but it has been in limbo since a massive ransomware attack hit the studio a few years back.

Sony obviously said nothing about the matter, so we’re free to speculate until confirmation—or lack thereof.

While we wait for Sony’s State of Play decision, Marvel’s Wolverine might come in 2026; Venom game is not dead

And while we’re talking gaming marvelness, it seems Wolverine has a penchant to attract more unconfirmed reports. This time, MP1st states that “someone familiar with the situation” confirmed to them that Marvel’s Wolverine will come out sometime in 2026, despite fears of a possible cancellation hitting the fanbase after Insomniac axed the then-planned three-part DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (originally, the game would have three expansions, focused on Carnage, Beetle, and a tie-in with the new Spider-verse movie).

Not only that, but it seems a Venom game is also still in active development, although probably in a very early stage and most likely won’t come out until 2027. According to the site’s source, Eddie Brock will be the main character—which is unsurprising, considering how Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ended—but it will feature Cletus Kasady, Carnage’s alter-ego, in some capacity. Also, Anti-Venom, though a different character from what we’ve seen so far (we sawthat in Spider-Man 2 as well, but it was controlled by Peter Parker, which will not be the case here).

Finally, the same source also stated that a Spider-Man 2099 spin off is in the works, featuring Miguel O’Hara as the lead. However, no one knows if this is related to the ongoing projects or if this is something of its own—remember, Spider-Man 2 did hint at the presence of a Multiverse in one of its missions, so this all just might be those scrapped DLCs taking on a full, standalone release format, like Miles Morales was.

Given the weight of all the unconfirmed rumors, it seems Insomniac is ready to pick up the pace on its Marvel projects, leaning into some heavyweight brands from the comic book company.

At any rate, though, things are just like we said: rumors. It is unclear if any of these projects will be featured in Sony’s next State of Play event (or if there will be an event at all). Other rumors that have made the rounds in the past include a State of Play revealing a God of War spin-off in a Metroidvania-based gameplay, although that piece of news has been absent for some time. So, you know, rumors and all: take them with a grain of salt.

Furthermore, a State of Play event for an American-centered game being revealed this close to Tokyo Game Show seems…off, somehow. We know some publishers who’ll be attending the event in Japan have closed slots for unrevealed games, but TGS has been more Asia-centered for quite a few years now, making a Wolverine-centered stream that much unlikely.

However, it is also important to note that last time Sony did a stream, we got 007 – First Light, which is poised to be a pleasant surprise to say the least. And let’s not even start on Ghost of Yotei: it’s event turned out to be quite interesting as well.
