In a case of quick rise and equal downfall, Amazon Games has confirmed it will shut down its MMORPG New World: Aeternum in January, 2027. The game, originally released in September 2021, arrived on consoles in October 2024, but it was hit with major layoffs at the same time it released its final content — the Nighthaven expansion — in October last year.
The “now”, however, is not sitting pretty, with OpenCritic listing the game at 48% critic recommendation and a 7/20 user rating. As the game winds down, expect some price cuts on merch like hoodies and game guides, so there’s that.
The shut down process, however, starts right now: as of today, January 15th, the game is being delisted across all stores. For the record, New World: Aeternum was available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
“We want to thank the players for your dedication and passion. We are grateful for the time spent crafting the world of Aeternum with you. Together we built something special. While we are saddened to say goodbye, we’re honored that we were able to share so much with the community,” said the studio through a statement.
As per SteamDB data, the has fallen down to about 1,100 concurrent players on Steam as of late, but at its peak it attained numbers higher than 900,000 at its early days.
According to Amazon Games, while the game is no longer available on any store, players who currently have it installed will still get security patches and the studio itself will be monitoring for bugs and glitches. Microtransactions will also work, but only until July 19th, 2026, when the Masks of Fortune currency gets discontinued.
