Nintendo’s latest earnings report has officially confirmed Nintendo Switch to be Nintendo’s best-selling console in history. The first-generation and original gaming handheld in the Switch lineup has finally surpassed Nintendo DS sales. The Nintendo Switch took about nine years to take the crown from the dual-screen and foldable gaming handheld released way back in 2004. The earnings report has further revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 has continued to be the fastest-selling gaming console.

Nintendo Switch Sales Cross 155 Million Units

The Nintendo Switch was breathing down Nintendo DS’s neck for quite some time and eventually managed to leave it behind over the holiday period. As per Nintendo’s Q3 financial results, the Nintendo Switch has sold 155.37 million units since its debut in 2017. In comparison, the Nintendo DS had lifetime sales of 154.02 million units. The gaming handheld sold 1.36 million units during Q3.

The latest numbers mean the Sony PlayStation 2 is the only console ahead of the Nintendo Switch with 160 million units sold. Even though the difference is less than 5 million, the actual journey is likely to prove to be more difficult than one would anticipate. This is because Nintendo’s primary focus is obviously on its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo Switch 2 Continues to be Fastest-Selling Console

In comparison, the Nintendo Switch 2 has continued posting impressive sales figures. It sold 7.01 million units during the previous quarter, which means it is still the fastest-selling console with 17.37 million units sold since its release seven months ago. This means it has already surpassed Nintendo Wii U’s lifetime sales of 13.7 million units. The company is expecting to sell 19 million units by the end of this fiscal year.

These numbers are not surprising, as we have seen multiple popular and mainstream games launch on Nintendo Switch 2. Some of these include the likes of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Dave The Diver, Red Dead Redemption, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, and Dispatch. In other news, Apex Legends is set to be discontinued on Nintendo Switch and will be available only on Nintendo Switch 2.
