PUBG creator new game — Prologue: Go Wayback! — is now on early access for PC players. The game is what I like to call “environmental survival”, since it uses pretty much everything in a map to force the player into do-or-die situations.

The game’s magic trick relies on something called “procedural mapping”, where the map you’re in changes drastically between one playthrough and the other. The context: you’re lost in an incredible expansive wilderness, with little resources at hand and the necessity to survive.

Nothing that we haven’t seen before but the thing is: the map is huge. Like huuuuuge, over 60 kilometers in real life measurements, to be precise — Brendan Greene himself, who created PUBG, equated it to “the entire internet in a game” once.

And in this immense setting, everything changes at a whim, and suddenly your safety might become your undoing, as you felt safe to hoard warmth-related items only to see a scorching heat come up in your next playthrough.

The objective is to find shelters — weather towers, in this case — where you can fall into and assess your plans going forward. But, like we said, there’s only so much planning you can do given the fact that the map will change after you leave safety, so not only you’ll have to be intelligent about your resources, there’s also a degree of luck involved as well.

According to the early game details, Prologue: Go Wayback! featured three main difficulty modes: “Go Wayback!” is your Normal setting, while an easier, story-based time will let up on the survival aspects for you to enjoy the scenery and the plot. However, the “Objective: Survive!” mode is the one that will really put you through the wringer — you know a difficulty setting will be something else when it has exclamation marks on its name.

Besides the normal game, Prologue: Go Wayback! is also getting a handful of cool features in its early access, like a map editor that gives you the ability to upload an image to be incorporated on it, and a map designer, so you can…design your own maps, duh!

Anyway, despite being a lush-looking game, Prologue: Go Wayback! is not so demanding when it comes to playable PC specs: the GPU models required are pretty much on the cheap right now — even better, during Black Friday times — so you probably won’t have any trouble playing this to the fullest.
