Unknown Worlds has officially announced a free Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade for Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero will release on February 17. This unexpected announcement is finally some good news for Subnautica fans who eagerly waiting for Subnautica 2. The free upgrade will bring multiple visual and performance upgrades to improve the gameplay experience on the current-gen Nintendo gaming handheld.
Subnautica Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Details
The announcement post reveals that the Subnautica Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade will deliver enhanced resolution, smoother frame rates, and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls support. Both Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero will support 1080p gameplay at 60fps in Handheld mode. The performance will bump up to 1440p at 60fps in the docked mode. This is a dedicated mode for a bigger-screen gameplay experience when you connect the Nintendo Switch 2 with a compatible TV using the Nintendo Switch 2 dock.

This is a welcome change for the game’s fans who have or are planning to buy the Nintendo Switch 2. The update will result in a more immersive underwater survival experience with more responsive controls. The Joy-Con 2 support will ensure a more precise movement and refined interaction on the alien oceanic planet.
How to Get the Free Subnautica Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade?
- Download Subnautica/Subnautica: Below Zero Nintendo Switch version on your Nintendo Switch 2.
- Make sure it is updated to the latest version.
- Open the Subnautica/Subnautica: Below Zero application page on the Nintendo Switch 2 store.
- Look for “Upgrade Pack” from the list of options.
- Click “Free Download” to begin the download process.
Do note that the Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade for Subnautica games is not available for free in Japan. Unknown Worlds says players from that region will have to pay JPY 100 for the upgrade due to local legal requirements. Another thing to note is that this upgrade will arrive in Japan at a later date.
