The French studio Ubisoft has issued a press release announcing a major company reset at organizational, operational, and portfolio levels. It has decided to cancel six games, delay seven games, and close two studios to “reclaim creative leadership and restore sustainable growth”. Unfortunately for fans, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is among the games that have been cancelled. The two studios that have been shut down are Ubisoft Stockholm and Ubisoft Halifax.

Ubisoft Cancels Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake and Five More

The official announcement reveals six games have been cancelled, including Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. The remake of the 2003 classic was first announced way back in 2020. It faced multiple delays since then and was slated for a release in early 2026, but as per the latest developments, the troubled project will not see the light of day. Other cancelled titles include four unannounced projects, including three new IPs, and a mobile game. These six titles are said to have failed to “meet the new enhanced quality as well as more selective portfolio prioritization criteria at Group level”.

Ubisoft Prince of Persia

A separate explanation was shared on the Prince of Persia’s official X account:

To the Prince of Persia community, We want to share this with you directly. We’ve made the difficult decision to stop development on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. We know this is deeply disappointing. The game carries enormous meaning for fans and for the teams who worked on it. While the project had real potential, we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve, and continuing would have required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit. And, we didn’t want to release something that fell short of what The Sands of Time represents.

Additionally, Ubisoft has decided to delay seven titles to “ensure enhanced quality benchmarks are fully met and maximize long-term value creation”. One of these titles is said to have been planned for a FY26 release, but will now arrive in FY27. While the studio has not named this title, rumors suggest it is Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remaster. This rumored title was also spotted on the PEGI certification website recently.

Ubisoft Announces Major Organizational and Operational Shake-Up

Apart from delaying and cancelling games, Ubisoft has announced a major organizational and operational shake-up to change how it approaches game development and resource allocation. It said these changes and decisions will help it focus on Open World Adventures and GaaS-native (Game as a Service) experiences. The team has refocused its portfolio with a “meaningfully revised” 3-year roadmap.

Ubisoft’s new operating structure will revolve around five Creative Houses, which will receive development resources and support from a Creative Network. These houses are named Vantage Studios, Creative House 2, Creative House 3, Creative House 4, and Creative House 5. Each house will have clear objectives and guiding principles:

  • Vantage Studio will focus on Ubisoft’s largest and most established franchises like Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, and Rainbow Six Siege
  • CH2 will focus on competitive and cooperative shooting experiences like Ghost Recon, The Division, and Splinter Cell
  • CH3 will focus on select, sharp Live experiences like The Crew, For Honor, Riders Republic, Skull & Bones, and Brawlhalla
  • CH4 will focus on immersive fantasy worlds and narrative-driven universes like Anno, Prince of Persia, Beyond Good & Evil, and Might & Magic
  • CH5 will focus on reclaiming Ubisoft’s position in casual and family-friendly games like Just Dance, Hungry Shark, Hasbro, Uno, and Ketchapp

Ubisoft said it is currently working on four new IPs that will be revealed at a later date.
