Where Winds Meet has been out for some time now and, given the game’s popularity on platforms like TikTok and Weibo, it’s not without reason to think that NetEase’s foray on the gacha genre is making big waves.

One of the main reasons for that is, unlike Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves (where items you may or may not pull do have an impact on gameplay, Where Winds Meet pull system is entirely cosmetic, focusing on character looks and some consumable items with little to no effect.

That means the entire spectrum of gameplay is available to the player from the get-go — and that includes character building. Make no mistake: Where Winds Meet is LOUSY with options to customize your character’s fighting skills and fine tune them for your own style.

Given that first-time players might be shocked by the sheer amount of stuff to do in Where Winds Meet, we’ve come up with a few tips for you to focus on when it comes to developing your character, so read on to see which play style suits you best.

Oh, and if you’re hankerin’ for other guides in other games, we have an entire page for that, too, so do check it out to find out if we have covered your favorite game or not.

I. All-Around Build: Strategic Sword and Nameless Spear

This combination is highly regarded for its versatility, offering a balanced mix of crowd control and mobility. It is particularly effective at wearing down durable opponents in both player-versus-environment (PvE) and player-versus-player (PvP) scenarios.

However, despite being the most “basic” build on this list, it’s not the easiest to manage: being highly dependent on stamina, the all-rounder players will need extreme precision and knowledge of the inner workings of most of Where Winds Meet’s mechanics — especially parrying, perfect-dodging and Qi conservation. And it also does not have the attack power to deal too much damage.

In other words: if you let go of a strategic approach and just let loose, enemies will make mincemeat out of you sooner rather than later.

  • Weapons: The Strategic Sword provides high mobility and damage-over-time (DoT) through bleed effects, while the Nameless Spear excels at crowd control and committed burst attacks.
  • Key Features: This build allows you to dive into combat, weaving through enemies to apply status effects and using wide sweeps to break an opponent’s stance.
  • Capacity: It focuses on spacing and disables, preventing enemies from safely executing area-of-effect (AoE) attacks or closing gaps.
  • Requirements: Effective play requires careful Endurance management to sustain its fast-paced rotations.

II. Tank Build: Thundercry Blade and Stormbreaker Spear

Everybody loves a damage sponge, and Where Winds Meet does have a tanky build to soak up damage with high defense and tons of HP. The primary role of this setup is to occupy the frontlines, withstanding the onslaught of enemy attacks, their attention and aggression to allow for complex combos.

However, as it is the case with every Tank in online games, this Where Winds Meet build lacks movement — it is really sluggish in combat, usually trading speed for sheer power. Also, it lacks any self sustaining capacity, as it does not bring any healing powers with it — some bosses are not only fast, but hard-hitting and bring combos up to seven, eight moves a time.

Even a bulky build will suffer under that kind of duress.

  • Weapons: The Thundercry Blade and Stormbreaker Spear are the core weapons, focusing on reducing incoming damage and creating protective barriers.
  • Armor Sets: Utilize the Rainwhisper set to increase critical damage when protected by a shield, and the Moonflare set to generate more shielding opportunities during combat.
  • Buffs and Debuffs: The Stormbreaker Spear can use Roar to decrease damage taken and Thunder Shock to increase the damage enemies receive. Using charged attacks triggers the Drumbeat buff, which significantly increases your offensive output.
  • Inner Ways: Equip Exquisite Scenery for free charged attacks after defending, Art of Resistance to extend shield duration, and Battle Anthem for increased boss damage. Morale Chant provides a stacking damage buff that builds as you attack.

III. Healing Build: Soulshade Umbrella and Panacea Fan

Often referred to as the Silkbind – Deluge path, this build is the ultimate support setup, essential for keeping oneself alive both against minor to mid level mobs and a lot of bosses.

The thing is, much like the Tank build, the stereotype is real here too: Where Winds Meet healers often bring the poorest offensive capacities, dishing little damage in exchange for evasiveness and curatives. Don’t get us wrong, a Healer can absolutely stand on its own two legs — but large-HP-able enemies will require patience, as those will be fights that will drag on and demand some time to finish.

Oh, and we definitely wouldn’t recommend going in as a Healer in PvP: NetEase nerfs curatives rather heavily when fighting online, so this won`t be of much help for you.

  • Weapons: The Soulshade Umbrella provides passive sustain and buffs, while the Panacea Fan offers direct healing and specialized support skills.
  • Armor Sets: The Ivorybloom set is recommended for its boost to critical healing chances, while the Whirlsnow set provides emergency self-recovery at low health.
  • Support Features: The Soulshade Umbrella casts Floating Grace to buff team damage and Echoes of a Thousand Plants to create a healing zone that generates a resource called Dew. The Panacea Fan uses this Dew to cast Emerald Dewtouch for direct heals or Cloudburst Healing to summon a restorative water clone.
  • Special Abilities: This build has the unique capacity to resurrect fallen allies every 30 seconds using the Panacea Fan’s special skill.
  • Inner Ways: Royal Remedy and Mending Loom improve Dew generation and clone efficiency, while Restoring Blossom increases the potency of critical heals.

IV. DPS Build (1): Strategic Sword and Heavenquaker Spear

Known as the Bellstrike – Umbra path, this build focuses on high-speed strikes and detonating status effects for massive burst damage. The problem is…well, it takes some time to quite get there: eager players will struggle to see the initial damage being subpar, offering little more than a comfortable fight. You absolutely can plow through enemies and the use of the spear also allows for some lateral damage, which allows you to net a few quick hits on the enemies you’re not focusing on.

Furthermore, this build resets enemies stacking stats, which will force you to be on a constant lookout for status icons onscreen, as to not waste major damage dealing opportunities such as stagger finishers.

  • Weapons: The Strategic Sword acts as the primary tool for applying and detonating bleed, while the Heavenquaker Spear provides buffs and heavy AoE coverage.
  • Armor Sets: The Hawkwing set is ideal for boosting attack damage and affinity rates, while the Eaglerise set grants a defensive buff whenever you deal damage through bleed.
  • Combat Mechanics: The goal is to stack Bleed on a target up to five times; once reached, the Strategic Sword can detonate these stacks for a massive damage spike.
  • Buff Capacity: Using spear skills grants a buff that scales with the number of hits landed, which is further enhanced by Wolfchaser’s Art to make the buffs easier to activate against single targets.
  • Inner Ways: Sword Horizon adds follow-up attacks to your sword skills, and Fivefold Bleed gives every attack a chance to trigger bleed while adding piercing damage at maximum stacks. Morale Chant is also included here to provide a consistent, stacking damage increase.

V. DPS Build (2): Infernal Twinblades and Mortal Rope Dart

Known as the Bamboocut – Wind path, this Where Winds Meet character build is equivalent to the “Assassin” setup from other games, as it is designed for high-speed, multi-hit aggression and is particularly dominant in competitive PvP scenarios.

The downside resides on numbers — not yours, but the enemies’: using the Bamboocut build will definitely make you a force to be reckoned with in PvP matches or against any and all bosses in the solo game. But it does not behave well when it comes to mobs, since this build is more recommended to a unit-by-unit attack.

Also, as assassins go, this build also lacks defense, so unless your combo timing is pristine, enemies will find gaps to hit you and interrupt your flow. Either that or drown them in a barrage of blade strikes.

  • Weapons: The Infernal Twinblades are the core of the build, enabling rapid-fire strikes, while the Mortal Rope Dart provides technical support and burst potential.
  • Armor Sets: This build functions as a specialized assassin setup that prioritizes maximizing the frequency of hits to trigger secondary effects that increase damage based on hit count. In other words, any armor set that prioritizes critical rate and damage will work wonders.
  • Combat Mechanics: The primary strategy involves using high attack speed to overwhelm opponents, utilizing a playstyle that rewards constant pressure and multiple consecutive hits.
  • Buff and Skill Capacity: It utilizes the skills Rodent Rampage and Addled Mind to execute massive burst damage that leaves enemies with almost no room for counterplay. The build also features a specific buff that grants both increased damage and lifesteal, allowing the user to sustain themselves while remaining offensive.
  • Inner Ways: As with other high-frequency builds, Morale Chant is a critical inclusion, as it provides a stacking damage buff that builds naturally through the twin blades’ rapid attacks.

Bear in mind, these are some suggestions — some of which we have played on our own, some of which we’ve seen detailed on social media and printed game guides. Like we said, Where Winds Meet is a massive game, and there’s a cup of oolong tea for everybody.

Furthermore, these builds are just a broad framework, and you can always use these and fine-tune them into something with your own flair to it. If you do, though, let us know in the comments how it go!
