Last January, several reports stated that Sony cancelled two live service games — one of them being a God of War multiplayer project that, ten months later, has retaken headlines as the game’s alleged screenshots have emerged online.
The screenshots come courtesy of MP1st, who states the assets were shared with the page through an insider source. Most of the images (which you can find in the very clickable gallery below for all its HD goodness) consist of environmental settings and not a single one of them show actual characters — sorry, no Kratos to be spoken for here — but as simple as they are, they do give some references for keen, God of War-trained eye to recognize.

The God of War multiplayer game would’ve taken us back to Greece and it was meant to be Hades-related
Judging by the above screenshots, the God of War multiplayer game was meant to take the user back to Greece, a.k.a. the original trilogy’s environment during the revenge quest Kratos undertook against the Olympian gods. If you played it on the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, you’ll most likely recognize the details in architecture and art work (statues, staircases and so on…) that do bring your mind to that time.
Granted, it is impossible to state where in the God of War timeline this live service project would fit (or if it would fit at all…), especially since, in 2018, Sony took the franchise to more Scandinavian settings, making a now much older and wiser Kratos face off against the Norse mythology pantheon of deities — including a very much praised showdown with Thor himself on 2022’s God of War: Ragnarok.
Another detail that bungled up the timeline is the fact that two of the screenshots shared above are, supposedly, Hades’ Treasury in two versions: one regular, one seemingly “corrupted”. Little spoilers ahead: as most long time God of War fans know, Hades was originally introduced in the second game, before facing off against Kratos directly in the third and, well, things did not end well for the ruler of the underworld.
Too bad we’ll never know the answer: like we said, this project — supposedly handled by Sony’s own Bluepoint Games studio — was axed in January, 2025. And since Sony itself didn’t comment on these images so far, even stating they belong to a cancelled God of War multiplayer project is a sentence that needs to be opened with terms like “supposed” or “alleged”, since there is no guarantee the screens actually are from it.
If not a multiplayer game, where is God of War going next
Despite a cancelled multiplayer project, the God of War franchise is far from inactive: while a new game has yet to be announced by Sony, Kratos’ voice actor has shared recently how much he hopes the brand is taken to Egypt — before being the voice of the Ghost of Sparta, Christopher Judge was more recognized as Stargate’s Teal’c, and given the show’s own take on the Egyptian mythos, such a move from Sony would mean a full circle on Judge’s own career.
However, the actor himself will have to wait to know more, as Sony is all hands on deck on a God of War show that is set to be released through Amazon Prime Video sometime in 2027 (hopefully), with filming expected to begin next year. Oh, and Ronald D. Moore will be helming that.
