Microsoft’s Forza Horizon 5 has emerged as the clear leader in the company’s recent effort to bring its biggest franchises to the PlayStation 5, selling 5.1 million copies on Sony’s platform as of early 2026.

The racing simulator, which originally debuted on Xbox and PC in 2021, arrived on the PlayStation 5 in April 2025. Despite the four-year gap since its initial launch, the title reportedly outsold the combined sales of the next four major Xbox-to-PlayStation ports released in 2025. Those titles include Gears of War Reloaded (572,000 units), Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (491,000), Microsoft Flight Simulator (166,000), and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 (50,000).

According to data from Alinea Analytics, Forza Horizon 5 generated more than $300 million in sales on the PlayStation 5 alone. After Sony’s standard 30% platform fee, Microsoft is estimated to have retained approximately $210 million in revenue. Analysts note these sales represent high-margin profit, as the bulk of the game’s development costs were amortized during its initial years as an Xbox exclusive.

The game’s performance was so strong that it was the second best-selling PlayStation 5 title of 2025, trailing only Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which sold 5.2 million copies during the same period.

Industry experts attribute the success to a specific “product-market fit”. While Sony’s Gran Turismo 7 serves the simulation racing market, the PlayStation 5 lacked a premier “arcade-style” racer after Sony moved away from the genre following the closure of the DriveClub franchise. This left a segment of the audience “hungry” for the experience provided by the Forza Horizon series. Player data shows that Forza fans on PlayStation 5 are largely casual gamers who also frequent mainstream titles like GTA 5, Fortnite, and Rocket League.

Strategic pricing also played a role in the game’s longevity. Though it launched at $60, several discounts helped maintain sales momentum. A September 2025 promotion that dropped the price to $29.99 resulted in a 3.4-fold increase in daily units sold. The game reached its highest single-day sales peak during the December holiday season, moving 33,000 units in 24 hours.

This commercial success comes as Microsoft shifts its focus toward a “platform-agnostic” publishing model. The report suggests that while the Xbox Game Pass subscription service remains a core part of the business, its growth has begun to stagnate, prompting Microsoft to seek “upfront revenue injections” from rival hardware platforms.

Looking forward, Microsoft has announced Forza Horizon 6, set in Japan, for Xbox Series X|S and PC. While a PlayStation 5 version has not been confirmed for launch, the Alinea Analytics report suggests that delaying a port could be a “mistake,” given the massive demand demonstrated by its predecessor and the potential appeal of a Japanese setting to the PlayStation user base.
