Remember GTA San Andreas? Well, a lot of people certainly do, as the 2004 game is still one of the most remembered members of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. And it seems to be on the verge of a comeback, albeit unofficially. And no, this is not a remaster of any sort.

You see, the experts at Revolution Team — the same guys responsible for the GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition from a few years ago — have announced their “GTA San Andreas Nextgen Edition”, a modding endeavor where they’ll bring the entirety of the original game (its contents, missions, optional activities and all) to the latest iteration of the RAGE Engine, giving the PlayStation 2 game a more PlayStation 4/PlayStation 5 look.

The RAGE Engine is, of course, the graphical suite of applications that made the visuals and sounds of GTA V and, of course, will be the cream of the crop on GTA 6 sound-and-visual experience. Despite being proprietary to GTA-maker Rockstar Games, the tech can be licensed by third parties, which is why the Revolution Team can use it on this endeavor.

And they even got a trailer, which you can see below:

Now, this time around, they are saying they’ll be more careful when choosing which information they put out and when, since they don’t want a do over with their last project: during Vice City Nextgen’s development, Take-Two Interactive (Rockstar Games parent company) tried the whole “Cease and Desist” and even to judicialize matters, claiming copyright infringement.

Revolution’s solution was to release the whole thing as a standalone project.

That cautious stance is also true for release dates: there’s no telling when the GTA San Andreas Nextgen project will come out, so we’re on waiting mode for a while. We hope it’s not too long, though: that trailer looks neat…
