Hideo Kojima, a renowned Japanese game designer, is well-known for introducing video games that are significantly different from other games of the same genre. His most recent Death Stranding games are a perfect example of that, and his next ambitious project, OD, is no different. In fact, OD is turning out to be such a different project from standard horror games that even Kojima is unsure if it will work out. He made the statement during a conversation with Ananweb (translated by Automaton).
Kojima is Trying to Change the Service Model from the Ground Up with OD
In the interview, Kojima said OD is a completely different game, and it will not be anything like the horror genre has offered so far. He added that he cannot yet tell exactly what the game is, but the recently revealed “Knock” teaser is full of hints. If people keep thinking about the trailer and things shown in it, they might be able to figure it out. If you have not watched the teaser yet or want to re-watch it, you can do so below.
Kojima further said that even though he has released stealth (Metal Gear) and delivery (Death Stranding) games that were different, they were similar to other games in terms of the system. His studio is working on and trying to change the service model from the ground up with OD. This is why even he is not sure if the OD horror game will work out.
We first heard about OD at the Xbox Showcase 2022, where it was teased as an unnamed project. The game was officially revealed at The Game Awards 2023 via a teaser trailer starring Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier. The aforementioned “Knock” teaser was released in September 2025 at the Beyond The Strand keynote. It shows Lillis’ character performing some sort of ritual before being attacked by a mysterious figure. The game is confirmed to offer a first-person perspective for a more immersive and scary experience. OD release date is yet to be confirmed, but do not expect it to arrive anytime soon.
