If your Megami Tensei itch needs a scratchin’, then look no further than Villion: Code, a new game announced by studio Compile Heart and made by Kouji Okada, co-creator of the longtime RPG series of games.

According to Famitsu, the new game will, in fact, follow the same “school RPG” formula that made Megami Tensei (and, further along the history, the entire Persona series) so famous. While details are somewhat scarce at this point, we can speculate usual mechanics like social links, a time-conditioned plot and a lot of literary references.

What we do know, however, is some good stuff — like Villion: Code’s platforms and release date: it arrives on May 25th, 2026 in Japan, for PlayStation 5, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, and Switch. No word on a Western release as of now, but one thing I personally like is the fact that the new game will come out for the PS4, giving Sony’s last generation console some proper love in this final stage of its life cycle.

Speaking of which, the PS4 version will be a digital only release, but the game will have physical copies and special editions on other platforms. Here’s the pricing info:

  • Standard Edition 8,580 yen / around 55 USD (PlayStation 5, Switch); 9,680 yen / 63 USD (Switch 2)
  • Limited Edition: 10,780 yen / 70 USD (PlayStation 5, Switch); 11,880 yen / 78 USD (Switch 2)
  • Collector’s Edition: 17,380 yen / 114 USD (PlayStation 5, Switch); 18,480 yen / 121 USD (Switch 2)

What’s Villion: Code all about

According to the official info, Villion: Code is set in a near-future Tokyo from an alternate reality — one where people have turned into monsters, roaming everywhere and attacking others on sight.

Gameplay mechanics include “procedurally generated” dungeons (which is not GenAI, as I’ve already seen some people asking) and “real-time speed action”. Since there’s still no gameplay footage, that last bit lead us to speculate combat featured to be something closer to Metaphor: ReFantazio (monsters roam environments in real time, and you can choose to engage in quick, one-hit kills if your level is high enough; or go for a full on, turn-based experience).

And for all the Megami Tensei and Persona peeps out there, Villion: Code also brought in a lot of people from the Atlus franchises. Besides Okada, the game also has Tadashi Satomi (Persona: Revelations and Persona 2: Innocent Sin / Eternal Punishment) as Scenario Writer, as well as Tsukasa Masuko (Megami Tensei, Megami Tensei II, Shin Megami Tensei, Shin Megami Tensei II, etc.) as Sound Composer.
