As online, open-world games go, I’ll be the first to admit I missed the mark on CarX Street, a multiplayer racing game originally released in 2022. However, allow me to fix that mistake by sharing the title’s new game mode, Showdown, which was announced by CarX Technologies through an exciting-looking trailer you can check out below.

According to the information available, the “Showdown mode” adds a “Cops versus Robbers” gameplay mechanic to the game, where up to 16 players take part in the match, split between the law defiers and the law enforcers.

The idea is to play a match of two rounds, role assignments made at random but always switching between rounds. In practical terms: you’ll always be a cop and a robber. The question is which one you get to be first. And as any open-world game will tell you, players have HP, which will end the match for you should it reach zero — you’ll lose any points for “undeliveries” and respawn back at the garage, where you’ll be able to start over from scratch…or not.

Now, the real kicker here is, despite being a cops versus robbers mode in a racing game, CarX Street Showdown won’t let you drive recklessly. That’s because you lose HP not only by confronting other cars, but also when you hit environmental hazards such as signs and cones.

So, in a sense, you ride fast but you still must keep your wits about you, adding a layer of strategy to the match: do you have enough HP to sacrifice in a “gung-ho” maneuver or should you avoid confrontation and play conservatively since your vital energy is somewhat lacking at the moment?

In this cops versus robbers deathmatch, by the way, the entire point is for robbers to reach certain parts of the map, while them bloody coppers gain points for preventing it by any means necessary.

It might sound like your run-of-the-mill Domination or King of the Hill type of mode you’ll see in earlier Halo or Call of Duty iterations, but given the street car racing context, this could be a cool experience.

CarX Street is available for PC, sold via Steam, Steam Deck and related devices.
