Dune: Awakening has a new update that brings a ton of new content for its fans. Titled “The Water Wars,” players will travel to the Old Quarry Testing Station, a scalable dungeon that culminates in a confrontation with a unique and devious adversary called “Dr. Jalanta”.
And she is no pushover, let me tell you. So here’s a guide providing all the necessary tactical intelligence to navigate her laboratory and survive the encounter. Beware for minor, although not game-breaking, spoilers and lore details.
Who is Dr. Jalanta?

In Dune: Awakening, Dr. Jalanta serves as the final boss of the Old Quarry, a secret laboratory established deep within the abandoned mineral halls of a forgotten industrial scar on Arrakis.
According to documentation found within the station, the doctor was once affiliated with the Water Shippers cartel but broke away, claiming to have “evolved” beyond their service. Now, she does research, focusing on highly dubious experiments involving “Abominations”—zombie-like creatures grown in vats and reanimated to serve as a labor force.
The path to her laboratory is relatively direct, typically taking players roughly 15 minutes to navigate. To reach her, survivors must clear two “lock-in” rooms filled with aggressive enemies and Abominations that utilize advanced Suspensor Jump tactics to bypass cover.
Boss Fight Strategy

As soon as you arrive Dr. Jalanta’s place, you’re in for a treat, as she is not a boss in the traditional sense. Dune: Awakening pits her in a support-style manner, whose primary threat stems from her management of her Abominations.
Her combat loop is defined by three health segments, with the intensity of her abilities increasing as each segment is depleted.
- Minion Management: Jalanta will routinely Summon Abominations from the ground, maintaining a horde of up to 17 minions. She can Inspire these creatures, marked by a red effect, which permanently increases their speed and aggression.
- The Healing Mechanic: Her most critical ability is Consume. Jalanta will mark Abominations with a yellow light, causing them to kneel before her. She then absorbs them to restore her own health. Players must prioritize killing these “yellow” ads immediately to interrupt her healing process.
- Offensive Threat: Jalanta herself utilizes a drillshot rifle that fires three rounds before reloading. These shots penetrate shields and deal significant damage; players must dash to remove the burrowing darts and avoid catastrophic health loss.
As a rule of thumb, your recommended loadout should be made of melee weapons with sweeping attacks, such as Swords or Dual Blades, so you can thin out the horde of minions she throws at you, while cheesing away some damage at the boss herself.
If you’re going for the ranged route, burst-damage weapons like the Perforator are ideal for targeting Jalanta during her reload or consumption animations.
The strategy is more or less the same throughout all her phases, although her increased aggression as the confrontation drags on will force you to some adaptations here or there.
Once Jalanta is defeated, it is important to remain vigilant: any surviving Abominations not only won’t die with her, but will become royally pissed, receiving a permanent buff to speed and aggression that requires a final cleanup to officially win the fight.
So yeah, technically, even though you beat the boss, you can still lose.
Post-fight Rewards

Defeating Dr. Jalanta grants access to a reward chest containing several high-tier items introduced in the 1.4 update. Notable drops include:
- Weapons: The Spitting Cobra SMG (poison-based), the Blind Fury sniper rifle, and the Hell-Fury Pistol.
- Garments: The Combat Exoskeleton Chestpiece, which provides a melee damage bonus, and the stealth-oriented Phantom Whisper set (Helm and Chestpiece).
- Augments: The update introduces 14 new Augments, such as Scattergun Rampage-Enhancement and Maula Pistol Antipersonnel Rounds, which can be found in the final loot pool.
- Crafting Materials: Players will also find Schematic Patterns, essential for crafting higher-grade equipment.
Final Thoughts

The encounter with Dr. Jalanta represents a shift in Dune: Awakening‘s endgame design, emphasizing crowd management and priority targeting over raw numerical power.
While her mechanics are less complex than some Deep Desert stations, the “Water Wars” content provides a steady progression path for solo and group players alike. Mastery of this fight not only yields some of the most potent gear in the current meta but also sheds light on the darker corners of the political and scientific strife defining Arrakis.
Dune: Awakening is available for purchase on Windows, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
