Marathon is Bungie’s take on a competitive extraction shooter, where players step into the role of Runners navigating a hostile sci-fi world. The core loop revolves around scavenging resources, completing objectives, and extracting safely, all while dealing with both AI threats and other players. Because of that mix, matches often turn into tense, high-risk encounters where conflict is hard to avoid.
That constant pressure has been a defining part of the experience, but it has also shaped how players approach the game. Bungie’s latest mid-season update, version 1.0.6, directly responds to that dynamic by focusing on community health and gameplay accessibility.
Beyond standard hotfixes, the patch introduces new currencies, dedicated solo-player mechanics, and notable shifts to the combat meta that encourage cooperation instead of nonstop aggression. Check out the full breakdown below.
The CyberAcme Runner Reinforcement Initiative (C.A.R.R.I.)

The update’s most impactful addition is the C.A.R.R.I. protocol, a new system that rewards players for positive social interactions. By completing objectives and exfiltrating together, Runners earn CyberAcme Commendations, a new material that can be spent at the C.A.R.R.I. Armory for salvage and reputation packs.
- Cooperation Incentives: Players receive extra commendations for exfiltrating with Runners who are not part of their pre-made crew.
- Stay Together: A new experimental feature allows you to instantly form a crew with random players you successfully exfiltrated with during a match.
Major Buffs for Solo and Beginner Players

To address the difficulty for lone Runners, Update 1.0.6 provides significant progression and survivability boosts. For solo players, there is a new item called the “Depleted Self-Revive Kit,” which spawns exclusively in solo matches to give lone Runners a second chance. It cannot be extracted.
In addition, solo progression has been improved. Runners now benefit from increased XP rates as well as higher faction reputation earnings. Beginner players will also have access to The Perimeter map exclusively until Seasonal Level 12. This offers a reduced risk of enemy encounters and five new exclusive contracts.
Combat Rebalancing and New Gear

The Marathon 1.0.6 update also brings changes to the overall combat landscape. Specific weapon types have received reworks, and new rare loot items have been introduced.
- Railgun Overhaul: All Railguns have received a massive buff. They no longer auto-fire when maximum charge is reached, allowing players to hold a fully charged shot indefinitely while peeking corners.
- Deluxe Unique Weapons: Eleven new blue-rarity Unique weapons can now drop from secured resource events in Perimeter and Dire Marsh. These feature specialized “sweetener” mods that were previously reserved for higher-tier gear.
- Meta Tuning: The popular Bully SMG has received a nerf to its aim assist and accuracy. Meanwhile, the Biotoxic Disinjector now inflicts self-damage with its grenades, requiring more careful use.
Enhanced Social and Cooperation Tools

Finally, Bungie is giving Runners new tools to de-escalate fights and support their teams more effectively. One of these tools is the Mercy Kit, which allows players to revive downed enemy Runners. This makes it possible to achieve friendly outcomes even after a firefight.
Additionally, five new team implants are being introduced, such as “Group Therapy” and “Herd Immunity,” both of which provide stacking stat bonuses to you and nearby allies when performing specific actions.
Final Thoughts

Update 1.0.6 aims to balance Marathon’s cutthroat environment by providing tangible rewards for teamwork and reducing friction for solo and new players. For the community, this represents a major step toward a more nuanced ecosystem where cooperation is just as viable as aggressive PvP.
