Bungie released Marathon, its extraction shooter title, on March 5th, 2026, and the game is already making waves in the genre with its exciting, action-packed raids on the planet Tau Ceti IV. In Marathon, rather than playing as the traditional operators or agents, you spawn in as customizable Runner Shells, which are essentially character classes with unique Prime abilities (ultimates), tactical skills, and traits that shape everything from stealth flanks to frontline brawls.

There are seven Runner Shells available at launch: Assassin, Destroyer, Recon, Thief, Triage, Vandal, and the solo-specialist Rook. Each shell boasts a different skill on offer, and with the heat management system (overheating from ability spam or movement), team synergy in squads is essential. But which ones are dominating the early meta?

Note: The meta is still settling, and Bungie loves balance tweaks, so check patch notes and PRG for updates.

S-Tier (Must-Picks / Meta Staples)

Triage (Healer/Support)

The triage is the primary medic or healer runner in Marathon. As the Triage, you have two main traits for healing: Shareware.exe, which shares the benefits of healing consumables with allies connected by a Med-Drone, and Battery Overcharge, which boosts weapon damage while allowing Volt weapons to EMP enemies upon breaking their shields. The Triage can not only restore health but also damaged shields as well, keeping the team in the fight.

Recon (Intel/Support)

The Recon runner, while not the greatest combat shell, still contributes a great deal to the team during matches. As the team’s primary intelligence gatherer, you must utilize your tracking and scanning abilities to locate enemies and control the battlefield. Your key traits are the Stalker Protocol ability, which highlights enemy footprints after breaking their shields, and Interrogation, which pings all the remaining living teammates of an enemy you have executed, making it easier to complete squad wipes.

Destroyer (Tanky Brawler)

The Destroyer is the powerhouse of any team in Marathon and a very fun and destructive way to experience the game. As the Destroyer, you possess a Riot Barricade tactical shield that provides front-facing immunity to incoming damage, allowing the user to push enemies, protect teammates, and lock down areas.

You also have access to the devastating Search & Destroy homing missiles, which automatically lock onto and track enemies while you are firing your primary weapon. These homing missiles deal damage, provide sustained pressure, and can immobilize targets on impact. Finally, with the Thruster dash and Tactical Sprint traits, you can move significantly faster, at the cost of higher heat generation.

A-Tier (Strong & Flexible)

Thief (Mobility/Loot Specialist)

As the Thief runner, you are agile, extremely mobile, and the team’s means of locating and retrieving high-value loot. You are capable of unique movement patterns with the use of your grappling hook and stealing loot from enemies with your pickpocket drone. The X-ray Visor allows you to spot loot and enemies through solid objects like walls, and your “The Finer Things” trait improves your weapon handling and the speed of your grapple recharge based on how much loot you’re carrying. The thief excels at playing on the “edges” of combat, using stealth and speed to rob other players before fleeing.

Vandal (Agile Disruptor)

The Vandal is very unique in its role and quite interesting to play as. As the Vandal, your job is essentially to cause chaos. With blistering speed and chaotic abilities, it is designed to disrupt enemies. You fulfill this charge with the help of your microjets (double jump) and powerslide (extended slide), which allow for rapid navigation and repositioning, though they generate extra heat. The Vandal excels at using superior movement to outplay opponents, making it ideal for players who want to be a constant, disruptive threat on the battlefield.

B-Tier (Niche / Situational)

Assassin (Stealth Flanker)

As the name implies, the Assassin is a stealth-focused runner. With the Assassin shell, you have access to a camouflage ability that renders you invisible to enemies, a smoke screen ultimate that blinds enemies within the AOE, and traits like Shadow Dive (a slam from above that emits blinding smoke) and Shroud (extra invisibility in smoke).

C-Tier (Avoid in Squads)

Rook (Solo Scavenger)

The Rook shell is the most unique runner in Marathon. The Rook is a solo-only scavenger shell designed for low-risk, mid-match looting with two main survival-focused abilities. Recuperation slowly regenerates any health lost, and Signal Mask is a disguise that causes the AI to ignore you, keeping you safe from attacks temporarily. These traits allow players to join in-progress matches without risking their own gear, acting as a “scav” run to replenish their inventory. The Rook is unlocked at Season Level 3 and cannot complete contracts, but can still earn faction reputation.

Best Squad Meta Right Now: Triage, Recon, and Destroyer/Thief. You can double up on Triage shells for unkillable sustain or mix in Thief for loot dominance.

Final Thoughts

Marathon rewards smart play over raw power; heat management, positioning, and loadout synergy matter more than picking the “best” Shell. Triage and Recon feel strongest in squads for their utility, while Assassin and Thief are great for solo queues with their mobility and stealth. The game’s still new, so expect shifts as players optimize Cores/Implants and Bungie drops patches
